ONEG SHABBAT began as a Bat Mitzvah project in 1998 to provide Shabbat and Holiday food to those in community who are unable to provide for themselves. Growing from a small organization feeding a handful of people, today we have provided over 500,000 meals and service over 100 families every week and on the Jewish holidays with an annual budget of over $300,000.
In cooperation with local establishments, meals are prepared and delivered in a respectful manner which insures the dignity and privacy of those we serve. ONEG SHABBAT recipients can choose between receiving prepared meals delivered to their home, or a credit to shop in local stores. This ensures the recipients’ anonymity, allowing them to be treated in the same manner as are other customers.
Our referrals come from many different sources, including community rabbis and lay leaders. ONEG SHABBAT is run entirely by volunteers with minimal overhead and no paid employees. All of the money collected goes directly to pay for the meals and services that we provide.
During the holiday season, ONEG SHABBAT runs extra drives and, with the help of local Yeshivot, makes festive packages for each holiday. Packages are then delivered to our recipients in the same respectful manner that our Shabbat and holiday meals are delivered. ONEG SHABBAT is always mindful of the sensitivity and privacy of our recipients and all of our programming and services are provided in that manner.
Please consider getting involved with ONEG SHABBAT through donating, volunteering and attending ONEG SHABBAT events. We are certain that you will find it to be a rewarding experience.
