About Us
Oneg Shabbat was started in 1998 as a bat mitzvah project to distribute Shabbat and Yom Tov food to those within the Upper West Side community who are unable to provide for themselves. What started out as a small organization feeding a handful of people has grown tremendously and now feeds over 100 families weekly.
Through the help of The Kosher Marketplace, meals are prepared and delivered in a manner which preserves the dignity and privacy of those served. Oneg Shabbat recipients have the choice of receiving prepared meals delivered to their door, or a credit to shop in the store. Doing it in this manner not only helps ensure anonymity for the recipients, but it allows them to be treated respectfully in the same way as all other customers.
Our referrals come from many different sources, including the Rabbis in the community, Dorot, and sometimes even referrals from our Food service and grocery partners. Nobody is ever turned away. What makes our organization so unique is that while serving it critical mission the organization operates with virtually zero overhead with no paid employees. All of the money collected goes directly to pay for the food that our recipients receive.
The major fundraiser for Oneg Shabbat has been the annual Family Day Carnival that has been running for the last 16 years. The carnival caters to families with children between the ages of 6 months and 12, with activities that include arts and crafts, a petting zoo, a bouncing castle and bungee run, face painting, and assorted sports, among other activities. The carnival is staffed by Oneg Shabbat volunteers and all the money raised goes directly to benefit Oneg Shabbat.
In addition, Oneg Shabbat runs extra drives and makes extra packages for the recipients for the Holidays. These extra drives are usually run by children in various schools in the neighborhood who create holiday care packages that are then delivered to the recipients.
Please consider getting involved either through donating, volunteering, or attending Oneg Programming. We are certain that you will find it to be a rewarding experience.
